2008 FAIC/ Latin American and Caribbean Scholarships to attend the AIC Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado.
The 36th Annual Meeting of American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Work (AIC) will be held at the Hyatt Regency Denver, Denver, Colorado April 21-24, 2008. The General Session topic will be “Creative Collaborations.”
Creative Collaborations is an intentionally broad topic meant to highlight successful projects completed by conservators partnering with professionals in other fields, such as scientists, engineers, artists, owners/shareholders, or industrial representatives.
Some ideas are:
- Post-Katrina or other disaster recovery activities involving conservators, museums, historic properties or other art collections, and insurance, storage, security and/or transit concerns
- projects related to the protection, recovery, or treatment of cultural property in war or conflict zones involving conservators and owners or agencies responsible for the cultural property
- projects involving conservators and environmental conservation/ protection
- projects involving conservators and others in the design of new museums or facilities, preservation of historic structures or artifacts, or treatment of industrial equipment
- collaborations between artists and conservators
- treatments done by conservators with different specialties, scientists, and/or professionals
Projects can be large or small, executed by large teams or just two individuals, but should include some new or creative information that will be educational or of benefit to the general conservation community.
The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (FAIC) is working on obtaining financial support to offer scholarships to conservation professionals from Latin America and the Caribbean to participate in the 2008 AIC Annual Meeting. This announcement is posted before the funding is obtained due to the length of time needed to disseminate the information, receive the documentation from applicants, and process the applications. However, this does not imply a commitment by FAIC to give scholarships. Conservation professionals with a minimum of three years of experience and currently employed in the conservation field may apply. Priority will be given to new applicants; previous scholarship recipients may apply again. The selection will be based on the quality of the essay. Please read carefully the following information and send an application in English to the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation, 2008 AIC Annual Meeting, at the specified address at the bottom:
- Personal information: full name, address, e-mail, fax, and phone numbers.
- Curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages, please do not attach photos and/or additional information).
- An essay, preferably on the topic of the conference (maximum 400 words). The essay needs to written both in English and the original language of the candidate so that it can be reviewed by the selection committee. The selected applicants will present this information as a poster (that meets the criteria established by the AIC) at the Poster Session during the meeting.
- Information on the institution where the applicant is employed: name, address, phone numbers, fax, e-mail, the applicant’s position in the institution, conservation tasks carried out on collections and how the applicant plans to share and disseminate the information gained from attending the conference and the symposium.

- A statement about the type of visa the applicant has to enter the USA. If the applicant does not have a visa, she/he will have four months to obtain it, from the date the scholarship is awarded (November 15, 2007). FAIC will send an original letter of award to be presented at the respective American Embassy. The costs associated with the visa will be the responsibility of the applicant.

The FAIC will provide partial financial support so the maximum number of scholarships can be awarded. All applicants must contribute part of the expenses to complete the total amount required.
