2008 FAIC/ Latin American and Caribbean Scholarships to attend the AIC Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado.

2008 FAIC/ Latin American and Caribbean Scholarships to attend the AIC Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado.

The 36th Annual Meeting of American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Work (AIC) will be held at the Hyatt Regency Denver, Denver, Colorado April 21-24, 2008. The General Session topic will be “Creative Collaborations.”

Creative Collaborations is an intentionally broad topic meant to highlight successful projects completed by conservators partnering with professionals in other fields, such as scientists, engineers, artists, owners/shareholders, or industrial representatives.

Some ideas are:

  • Post-Katrina or other disaster recovery activities involving conservators, museums, historic properties or other art collections, and insurance, storage, security and/or transit concerns
  • projects related to the protection, recovery, or treatment of cultural property in war or conflict zones involving conservators and owners or agencies responsible for the cultural property
  • projects involving conservators and environmental conservation/ protection
  • projects involving conservators and others in the design of new museums or facilities, preservation of historic structures or artifacts, or treatment of industrial equipment
  • collaborations between artists and conservators
  • treatments done by conservators with different specialties, scientists, and/or professionals

Projects can be large or small, executed by large teams or just two individuals, but should include some new or creative information that will be educational or of benefit to the general conservation community.

The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (FAIC) is working on obtaining financial support to offer scholarships to conservation professionals from Latin America and the Caribbean to participate in the 2008 AIC Annual Meeting. This announcement is posted before the funding is obtained due to the length of time needed to disseminate the information, receive the documentation from applicants, and process the applications. However, this does not imply a commitment by FAIC to give scholarships. Conservation professionals with a minimum of three years of experience and currently employed in the conservation field may apply. Priority will be given to new applicants; previous scholarship recipients may apply again. The selection will be based on the quality of the essay. Please read carefully the following information and send an application in English to the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation, 2008 AIC Annual Meeting, at the specified address at the bottom:

  • Personal information: full name, address, e-mail, fax, and phone numbers.
  • Curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages, please do not attach photos and/or additional information).
  • An essay, preferably on the topic of the conference (maximum 400 words). The essay needs to written both in English and the original language of the candidate so that it can be reviewed by the selection committee. The selected applicants will present this information as a poster (that meets the criteria established by the AIC) at the Poster Session during the meeting.
  • Information on the institution where the applicant is employed: name, address, phone numbers, fax, e-mail, the applicant’s position in the institution, conservation tasks carried out on collections and how the applicant plans to share and disseminate the information gained from attending the conference and the symposium.
  • A letter of commitment to attend all sessions and events in the conference and the workshops.
  • A letter with the following information:
  • An estimated cost of the round-trip economy airfare from your home city to Denver, Colorado.
  • A statement about the type of visa the applicant has to enter the USA. If the applicant does not have a visa, she/he will have four months to obtain it, from the date the scholarship is awarded (November 15, 2007). FAIC will send an original letter of award to be presented at the respective American Embassy. The costs associated with the visa will be the responsibility of the applicant.
  • A statement on how much could the applicant personally contribute to her/his expenses or from other sources of funding such as her/his institution or local foundations. The expenses including transportation, registration, hotel and miscellaneous are approximately:

Meeting Registration US $385.00
Workshops on April 20 and 21 (in Spanish) included]
Hotel (double occupancy w/other scholar, US $87/night) US $457.00
Food and miscellaneous (US $49/day x 6 days) US $294.00
Airfare from the applicant’s city to Denver, Colorado [varies]
Ground transportation, visa, other travel fees [varies]

Scholarship awards from FAIC will generally cover registration, hotel, and airfare only. A limited number of stipends for meals may be available and must be specifically requested.

The FAIC will provide partial financial support so the maximum number of scholarships can be awarded. All applicants must contribute part of the expenses to complete the total amount required.

All applicants of this LAC scholar program will attend two workshops in Spanish. France 2008 Phd Studentship

France: PhD Studentship in Economics, Cerna, Ecole Nationale Supérieure des mines de Paris

Cerna, the Center of Industrial Economics of the Ecole des mines de Paris, offers a PhD position to work on patents and standards in mobile telecommunications.

The number of cooperative technology standards ensuring compatibility between competing products has increased enormously in the past 20 years, especially in Information and Communication industries (DVD, MPEG, GSM, UMTS…). Innovators have an obvious interest in their patents being chosen by standards developers, since widespread adoption of their patents means that they will receive royalties from a large number of license holders. On the one hand, cooperative R&D can be largely undertaken for many complementary technologies must be put together to create a standard that is useful. On the other hand, competition between technology firms in standard-setting bodies can be fierce as each firm seeks to prove the superiority of its innovation and thus influence the choice of standard of its own patent portfolio. Alongside this above-board rivalry and pro-competitive coordination is the danger of anticompetitive behaviour. A firm can deliberately hide the fact that it owns an essential patent in order to hold-up the manufacturers once they have invested around the standard. Patent holders can also collude to foreclose the technological market and get higher royalties.

The goal of the thesis is to undertake an economic analysis of pro and anticompetitive effects of patents strategies in standards.

Until now, most of literature has focused on patent pools, that is, on the way to reduce transactions costs for standard’s users and to mitigate the multi-marginalisation, or Cournot, problem. By contrast, the thesis will be mainly devoted to ex ante patent strategies, e.g. strategies that took place before the standard is adopted. A special emphasis will be put on patent disclosure rules, the commitment to set reasonable royalties and the features of the R&D competition and cooperation.

The empirical part of the thesis will focus on mobile telecommunications, especially on patent strategies regarding G3 technologies (W-CDMA and UMTS) and mobile TV (DVB-H, MediaFlo).

The job is open to candidates from France or any other country. French speaking is not required. Training in Microeconomics, Econometrics, Industrial Organization, or Economics of Innovation would be appreciated.

The thesis will take place at Cerna within the Law and Industrial Economics team, under the supervision of Professor François Lévêque. It takes place in the wider framework of a research programme on intellectual property. The proposed scholarship is approximately 1400 € monthly.
